58% would take a pay cut to work in their pants

No commute, working in your pyjamas, daytime telly – there’s no denying the fact that the idea of working from home is an attractive one, particularly when you’ve spent the past half-hour on a stationary train with your nose pressed into a stranger’s armpit. But MT’s still a bit surprised at the results of a survey, which found that a whopping 58% of people would take a pay cut if it meant they could work from home. They must be big fans of Jeremy Kyle...

Of the 350 people interviewed by call centre operator Arise, whose staff all work from home, 80% said they’d like to work at home 'at least part of the time’ – which is a lot more than the 25% who currently do, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics.

Of the people who said they’d be willing to take a pay cut, a third said they wouldn’t mind it if their wages dropped by 5% if they could work from home, while 17.5% said they’d be happy to take a 10% pay cut. Almost 8% added that they’d be happy to take a 25% wage cut if it meant they could spend all day working in their pants. That’s dedication.

To be fair, many of those who said they’d be willing to take a pay cut reckon they can make savings elsewhere: indeed, a fifth said they’d save on everything from petrol, to public transport, to childcare, to 'fancy work clothes’. Just over quarter added that they’d do it simply so they wouldn’t have to endure a long commute, while 40% wanted better work/life balance. Just under 5% had the rather po-faced excuse that they just want to get away from 'annoying co-workers’. We’re sure the co-workers feel the same way…

If you’re really that keen to work from home, then perhaps you’ll be interested in the 1,000 opportunities currently on offer from Arise. 'The pay range can vary from £6 to £11 depending on the call center rep’s experience and workload,’ it said. It’s a home working dream come true...
