Born in China, Ma started out as a cancer research scientist at Harvard Medical School before joining Bank of America Merrill Lynch in New York. It was 2008 – the height of the financial crisis – and Ma was a rare female trader on the derivatives desk. She’s now a London-based thematic investing strategist, leading the firm’s research on long-term trends such as ageing, artificial intelligence, climate change and cybersecurity.
