The First Five Minutes; Mary Mitchell & John Corr; John Wiley; pounds 11.99

This book covers everything related to first impressions, from boardroom meetings and job interviews to phone conversations and business lunches. Some suggestions are over-formal - eg, not addressing new colleagues by their first names until invited - but the overall advice is sensible.

RATING: *

Managing Your Image; Laurel Herman; Hodder & Stoughton; pounds 6.99

This book focuses too much on clothes, hair and make-up, with minimal references to posture, language and so on. But the wardrobe advice is comprehensive, with a useful section about choosing your image first, before finding the wardrobe to match.

RATING: **

Branding Yourself; Mary Spillane; Pan; pounds 12.99

The most comprehensive of the three, this book leaves no trouser suit unturned in its quest for the perfect image. Define your brand, act and sound the part, wear the right clothes, get the right haircut - Spillane is an expert in the field. Readable and useful.
