A spoonful of sugar may help unpalatable numbers go down, but 'granularity' is not about that. It means detail. The term 'granules' is now used in computer science, maths and linguistics to mean small chunks of information. The link is photography - physical grain in film stock determines detail. So granularity is about control of information. A non-granular finance director would tell his analysts to lump it. But sweetly.
