Company summary: A leading company in the builders' merchant and home improvement markets and a major supplier to the building and construction sector, Travis Perkins operates nine business brands from nearly 1,800 sites across the UK. Brands include City Plumbing Supplies, Wickes, Tile Giant and Toolstation, with more to be added in 2011. The company's roots go back to 1797. 'Building people, building Britain' is our employer strapline. We aim to develop our employees to reach their potential, while ensuring that anyone in Britain who wants to access any kind of building material through any form of supply channel can do so through the group.

Pay and benefits: Employees share in the success of the group through performance-related bonus, SAYE share option and Buy As You Earn schemes. These cover childcare vouchers, bicycle leasing for cycle-to-work, and a facility for donating to charity. The 'TP Reward Gateway' partners with 1,000-plus retailers offering discounts. There's a confidential advice programme and a pension scheme, and awards to recognise employees who consistently deliver excellence.

Promotion and development: Many people join the group at 18 and our highly regarded Management Trainee scheme provides the first step on the management ladder. The group offers opportunities to move across businesses - over 60% of current managers have risen through the ranks.

Company culture: In 1988, the group comprised 200 branches. Today, it has nearly 1,800. But Travis Perkins remains a people business, with a close-knit workforce of employees who enjoy their work. The engagement of all staff is important and we regularly seek their opinion. The group brand is more than a set of logos or images: it's the people who work for us, our branches, our stores, our products and services - how we all deliver on the promises made to customers each day.

Diversity, social responsibility: We support the local communities in which we operate, and now partner 11 charities - in the first half of 2010 we raised nearly £500,000. The group adopted the Breast Cancer Campaign and Children's Hospices UK charities on a two-year partnership; we created a pink campaign and even re-sprayed 12 of our delivery vehicles pink. Employees can donate their time and talent though our '1,000 Projects' community initiative.

Environment and sustainability: We continually look for new ways to improve the environmental performance of all our trading activities. We recognise that through partnership with suppliers and customers, significant environmental improvements can be made. We recently achieved the Carbon Trust Standard.

Innovation: Travis Perkins is widely recognised as an innovator in its industry. The focus in the past three years has been on the supply chain, which the group has completely restructured. This year, the company launched Innov8, an online facility allowing employees to share their innovations across the group in order to offer improved services to our customers.
