Leaving school at 16, Alfie Cheyne served an apprenticeship in Marine Engineering and Hydraulics. In 1987 he set up on his own as a valve specialist in the remote offshore industry criss-crossing the globe. In 1993 he started his own small engineering company in Aberdeen. A year later it won its first contract for large split winches and has never looked back. In 2013 Alfred Cheyne Engineering made £6.7m profit on £35.4m sales. Trading as Ace Winches, it has won numerous awards and contracts recently.
