Lessons in being a visionary, from YouTube

Date: 24-Apr-08
A guide to making the most of your ideas, with Harvey Keitel, Spinal Tap and Michel Gondry.

Suggest a visionary project to less open-minded colleagues and you can expect them to roll their eyes. Only by going for it anyway can you prove you were right all along. Harvey Keitel discovers in this in Smoke when he shows off his photo album – containing 4,000 shots of the same place.

Having a blinding idea is all well and good, but you need to be able to communicate the concept to others. As Spinal Tap discover, if you’re writing designs on the back of a napkin, it’s best to check it first before passing it on. [If things are particularly quiet in the office today, check out the full unfolding disaster, with both the stage show and the band’s debrief.]

Simple concepts may be the best, but that doesn’t always mean they’re easy to pull off. Like this Michel Gondry video for the Chemical Brothers, all based on how much of a pain it is getting out of bed to work in a mundane job. Gondry’s idea was to recreate 1980s video editing effects in real time. We still can’t work out how he dreamt this up, but it's fun to watch.
