Name a big Chinese brand. Until a few years ago you might have struggled to think of one at all. Nowadays most of us are familiar with the likes of Alibaba (‘China’s Amazon’), hardware makers Huawei and Lenovo and perhaps some of the newer internet giants like Tencent and Baidu, but few others come to mind.

That’s despite China’s rapid economic ascent, an emergence that’s turned dozens of new companies into monolithic corporations almost overnight. Cast an eye over the BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Chinese Brands study below. More than 50 have brands deemed to be worth more than $1bn, yet almost none are household names in the west.

That’s partly because so many have thus far remained within their home country’s borders – why look elsewhere when you have a domestic market of 1.4 billion people? But things are changing as China’s businesses get more confident, the market matures and technology continues to make going global an option for even the smallest of businesses.

‘Chinese brands today are less likely to ask whether they should expand overseas and more likely to spend time considering what strategy is best and how quickly to implement it,’ the report, by WPP and Kantar Milward Brown reads. ‘In the past, the few Chinese brands that contemplated overseas expansion usually did so as mature brands. Now, even some Chinese start-ups are developing plans for international growth.’

It may have developed a reputation for mass produced tat but China’s exporters are increasingly focused on the luxury end of the market, the report claims, and it’s beginning to have an effect. The proportion of global consumers who say they trust Chinese brands increased from 32% to 38% from 2013 to 2015. The proportion who said they have quality concerns about them fell from 67% to 53% in the same period. The country's businesses have also raised their profile through a series of acquisitions in the west, including Dalian Wanda's acquisition of AMC and ChemChina's buy out of Switzerland's Syngenta.

Top of the list is Tencent, whose brand value has soared by 29% to more than $106bn in the past year. The holding company is best known for its messaging apps including WeChat but it also has interests in music, gaming and online payments. Other familiar names on the list include beer brands Tsingtao and Snow Beer, while those with a stronger stomach might want to check out 9th placed Moutai, which makes a spirit from fermented sorghum.

It’s worth noting that these surveys have their flaws and limitations (more on that in this MT long read from last year) but the full list, below, is nonetheless an interesting look at the companies we’ll probably be hearing a lot more about in the not-so-distant future.
