The latest company to draw attention to some of the more amusing candidate cock-ups is recruitment website fish4jobs. It reckons that around three-quarters of all interviewers can’t abide sloppy CV mistakes – like grammatical errors, random facts or inappropriate contact details. Apparently some people haven’t yet worked out that giving your email address as email@example.com might actually ring a few alarm bells with your prospective employer.
In many cases, candidates only get things slightly wrong – but on a CV, one letter can make all the difference. Fish4jobs claim that some ‘common errors’ from their candidate database include people who claim that they have ‘worked in a busty office’, were ‘seeking a job in pubic relations’ or have been ‘trained in fist aid’. One of our favourites was a candidate a few years ago who claimed to be ‘an excellent profreader’. And there are undoubtedly plenty more embarrassing cock-ups where these came from.
The serious point about all this is that CV mistakes are more likely to torpedo your job prospects than anything else – including tardiness, inappropriate clothes or foul language. Which sounds to us like a pretty good argument for getting someone to cast a second pair of eyes over your masterpiece before you send it off.
However, if you’ve spelled the company’s name wrong on your application, you might as well turn up half an hour late for the interview in a rubber jumpsuit and tell the interviewers to stick their company where the sun doesn’t shine – because you’re not going to get the job anyway.
