French Connection to Foot Locker: 48 companies 'named and shamed' for not paying minimum wage

Big companies have been pulled up too, but it's small businesses that are really shortchanging workers.

The Government is really getting into this naming and shaming thing, publishing the third in a series of what now seems to be monthly lists of companies that failed to pay staff the minimum wage. It listed 48 employers that have to pay workers the more than £162,000 they’re owed, as well as fines of up to £20,000.

This latest round of public humiliation includes large, well-known retailers French Connection, Foot Locker and 99p Stores. But they weren’t the worst offenders when it came to the average amount they shortchanged staff by (although when you’re on minimum wage, currently £6.50 an hour if you’re aged 21 and over, rising to £6.70 in October, every little really does help) – French Connection failed to pay £16,436 to 367 workers, averaging out at £44.78 each.

It was small businesses – everything from computer shops to car dealerships – that really took the biscuit though. Fakenham Tandoori, for example, didn’t pay one worker a staggering £11,696.47.

Clearly not paying workers their due, especially low-paid ones who probably need the money more than most, is a bad thing. And publicly naming them may well be an effective tactic in preventing others from doing the same and repeat offenders, especially in a world where social media magnifies outrage and potentially lost business as a result.

But the Government’s triumphalism has more than a whiff of business bashing about it. It’s not clear whether these businesses made honest mistakes, got caught up in reams of red tape or actually set out to underpay their staff. The latter should be hung out to dry. But if it’s either of the former, then politicians and their mandarins should be helping those companies and identifying and resolving common problems that lead to minimum wage mistakes, instead of indulging in ritual humiliation.
