The high street is past its sell-by date, says Sainsbury's CEO

Quote of the day: Sainsbury's chief executive Justin King has pooh-poohed claims that the spread of supermarkets has killed off independent trade on the UK's high streets. 'Supermarkets have reflected society and changes in society.' he says. 'Many shoppers do not have the time to potter between the butcher, the baker and the grocer. Where high streets have declined, I do not believe that the blame can be laid at the door of supermarkets.'
