LAUNCHPAD: Girl Meets Dress stitches up its first funding round

The designer dress rental site has got its hands on a slice of $5m.

We’ve been tracking the progress of Girl Meets Dress since it was running in Louis Vuitton monogrammed nappies – so its announcement today that it’s completed its first round of funding warms our cockles no end.

The designer dress rental website said it had received an ‘undisclosed’ sum from Global Founders Capital, the new $200m fund run by the Samwer brothers, the founders of German e-commerce startup incubator Rocket Internet, and Fabian Siegel, the co-founder of food delivery platform Delivery Hero.

At the moment, Girl Meets Dress has a choice of about 4,000 dresses from over 150 designers. Its founders, Anna Bance and Xavier Lecaros-Aquise, say they’ll use the money to ‘accelerate growth’, expanding its position in the UK.

GFG said Girl Meets Dress was one of its first three investments – it’s also invested in French social fashion marketplace Videdressing.com and language learning site Lingoda.com.

Between the three of them, GFG has committed about $5m. That should stretch to a couple of little black Prada numbers…
