Stat of the day: £341 - The amount UK banks made per second during 2011.

That’s another season of banking results, and the associated outraged headlines, over and done with. But the Daily Mail has got its calculator out and worked out that last year, banks made a cool £10.7bn – which is equivalent to £341 a second. Well, that’s if you strip out the cost of having to shell out £5.9bn as compensation to customers who were mis-sold payment protection insurance.

The Mail is, naturally, appalled at the prospect of banks making money. ‘Anyone with a loan, insurance, current or savings account with these big banks helped them to this profit,’ it spat. On the other hand, of course, there’s the argument that the more taxpayer-funded banks like RBS and Lloyds can make, the sooner they’ll be out of the Government’s hands - which the paper seems to have conveniently forgotten...
