Football superstar Ronaldo teams up with Sir Martin Sorrell

It's an unlikely pairing to be sure, but Ronaldo wants to 'learn the ad game' and the WPP boss is willing to oblige.

Ronaldo, football supremo turned ad man, has been running Brazillian marketing agency 9ine for the past two years. Now, he’s decided that in order to learn more about the not-so-beautiful ad game, he should come to London and work with advertising tycoon (and co-founder of 9ine) Sir Martin Sorrell. ‘Eighteen years have passed and I’ve hardly studied at all; I feel a great need to become a student again,’ he says.

Ronaldo will be shadowing (or should that be marking) Sorrell for up to two years. Speaking to Brazilian newspaper Meio e Mensagem, he explains: ‘Learning from Martin Sorrell will be perfect. I won’t leave him alone. I’ll be asking him questions the whole day, just like a striker. The WPP boss has spoken highly of his new student, praising Ronaldo’s existing advertising skills - ‘Ronaldo had already had great success with clients Claro and Duracell’ – but doesn’t deny that a little more schooling would do the footie legend some good. ‘He’ll be coming to the UK to work with us closely there,’ he confirms.

This may all sound like a publicity stunt, but if it results in a Youtube video of Sorrell dashing around in a WPP strip, with Ronaldo urging 'Na minha cabeça, Martino!' [On me 'ead, Martin!'], we shan’t complain…
