Mixed EU impact

By European Business Forum Thursday, 01 June 2006

Integrating and unifying the European economy has had a mixed impact on business, according to this research among top executives of EU-based companies. While economic unification is seen as having benefited most businesses, larger enterprises have benefited more than smaller, with consumers supposedly doing even better. Product standardisation has delivered economies of scale for companies - although less than half of executives regard launching new products across the EU as a typical strategy - while there has also been an increase in the variety of products available.

However, increased competition and production savings are not seen as having delivered keener prices overall. The euro is blamed for a general increase in prices and for benefiting US exporters by simplifying their currency transaction costs. The study, based on research conducted in 2003 and 1993, sees the EU as still in transition between a country-by-country approach and pan-European business strategies.
