How to organise by skills

IBM is reorganising its 200,000 staff along skills lines. The aim is to take advantage of the global spread of competences -- it now has 43,000 employees in India, for example. In some cases they will have low cost labour, in others they will have high-skilled people near the customer base.

It has data management centres in different places in the world, so if one centre cannot operate for some reason, another can take up the slack.
More jobs will migrate to countries like India, a fact that leaves some IBMers less than enamoured with the new change plan. But the company is committed and expects productivity improvements coming from the global reorganisation to drive a large part of its future growth. Shareholders will be watching attentively.
