Britain's Most Admired By Sector: Leisure & hotels
Wednesday, 26 November 2008
Coming top for management, IHG, the world's largest hotel group, still reigns supreme.
1 InterContinental Hotels 65.0
2 Whitbread 63.4
3 Carnival 61.3
4 Compass 59.8
5 Ladbrokes 59.3
Bullish CEO Andrew Cosslett has admitted to a slowdown in the opening of new hotels, as travellers tighten their belts, although IHG's mid-market Holiday Inn chain should do well. Whitbread climbs two places to second, benefiting from a surge in demand for rooms at its budget chain Premier Inn. Six-month pre-tax profits were up 24% to £123.3m. Cruise-ship company Carnival slips one place, suffering because of the downturn. It suspended its quarterly dividend for 2009 to shore up its balance sheet ahead of a £2.2bn capital expenditure planned for the year.
