The year-on-year rise in the amount Britons spend a day on petrol, compared to last year.

Drivers are now paying £8m more a day to fill up their petrol tanks than at the same time a year ago. According to the AA, petrol prices have risen by more than 3p in the last month alone. The price of petrol, which has continued to increase steadily throughout the year, now stands at 122.14p a litre – rising from last week’s record figure of 121.76p.

And it seems the soaring costs are having an impact on how often we’re getting behind the wheel. According to AA president Edmund King, two-thirds of drivers are cutting back on journeys because of the price increase - although we’re sure the bad weather must also have had an impact too. Or perhaps the green movement has finally had its message heard. Either way, the bleak midwinter continues...
