Forget the doom mongers who predict the imminent demise of British manufacturing. Britain's Best Factories are alive and well and doing very nicely, thank you, as judges of this year's Best Factory Awards are finding out. They're not just attempting to keep their heads above water, the top plants shortlisted below are managing to achieve ever-higher standards and to provide even better service in the face of the ever-more stringent demands of their customers. 'If British manufacturing is as moribund and uncompetitive as some commentators suggest, these factories give the lie to that,' says Malcolm Wheatley, one of the judges. His only gripe? That 'the gap between the best factories and the run-of-the-mill seems to be getting wider'. The Awards, sponsored by English Partnerships, TDG, UPS Worldwide Logistics, The Bourton Group and The Sequoia Partnership, will be announced at The Savoy in London, on 27 October.
