1976: James Hanson knighted by Sir Harold Wilson. Company sells stake

in Charrington Gardner Locket. Wins tender for rest of US group

1977: Wins agreed bid for Hamlyn milling. Loses bid for Whitecroft

textiles and building when shares outrace bid. Sells Bucilla

Needlework from Carisbrook in US. Drops plan to bid for

Lindustries when board opposes it. Wins bid for US food service
