Aldi shunts Sainsbury's out of Britain's Most Admired Companies shortlist

Last year's winner Diageo and the rest of 2013's top 10 have all made the cut again.

The shortlist for MT’s Britain’s Most Admired Companies awards is out, featuring a mixture of newcomers and regulars in the reputation stakes. Now in its 24th year, the awards, announced on December 2nd, rank businesses based entirely on how their peers view them.

Last year’s winner Diageo makes the 50-strong shortlist, as do the rest of 2013’s top 10. Conspicuous by its absence, though, is Sainsbury’s, which came second in the ‘Retailers - Food & Personal’ category last year, while now-departed chief exec Justin King took home the Most Admired Leader gong.

Aldi makes the list again, after winning that sector - one of 26 - last year, while Alliance Boots is also shortlisted. It’s a sign that the march of the German discounters and the steady rise of Waitrose (John Lewis Partnership is also on the shortlist) is taking a toll on supermarkets’ reputations - and not just Tesco’s.

Bitter rivals Next and Marks & Spencer are both shortlisted, despite the former’s profits overtaking the declining high street giant for the first time this year. Pets at Home, which floated this year, makes an appearance. Challenger bank Handelsbanken replaces Santander, while HSBC makes the cut again.

Chemicals companies Croda and Johnson Matthey, both top 10 regulars, are on the shortlist again, as are easyJet and Stagecoach in the transport category.

The research, which ranks 200 of Britain’s largest companies over nine areas including innovation, quality of marketing and the standard of senior management, was conducted by Professor Michael Brown of Birmingham City University with Stuart Laverick.
