Apple share prices smash record

Tents and camping stoves on London's Regent Street since last Friday? It can only be the launch of Apple's latest Shiny Thing: the iPad 3, which goes on sale today, a snip at £399. If the tents outside Apple Stores all over the world are anything to go by (there were apparently 450 people waiting outside a store in downtown Tokyo), the new gadget will be just as popular as its predecessors. So it's no surprise that Apple's stock briefly hit the $600 (£381) mark yesterday - pushing the company's market cap up to a record $555bn.

That's not to say the company hasn't encountered one or two problems with the new gadget: the ongoing debate about working hours at its Chinese factories aside, the company's been told to stop putting the 4G logo on the new iPad's boxes, because the 4G network has yet to launch in Europe - thus, the device's 4G capability won't work. Still - we doub that'll put the company's legions of fans off...
