We’ve all made some inexplicable interview gaffes in our time, due to the stress of the application process: turning up on the wrong day, castigating our previous employer, forgetting to do our trousers up, that kind of thing. But we probably haven’t plumbed the same depths of stupidity as 28-year old Demetrius Robinson, who filled out an application form at his local Golden Pantry convenience store in Athens, Georgia – and then robbed it at knife-point.

Robinson, who was completing the application form under the supervision of the store clerk, waited until all the customers had left the store. He then grabbed a handy steak knife and forced the clerk to empty the till, before making off with his ill-gotten gains. We’re assuming he’d changed his mind on the job front by this point, but we wouldn’t like to swear to it.

With the deviousness of a master criminal, Robinson used a bogus address on the application form to stop the store tracking him down. However, with the hopelessness of the criminally stupid, he’d used his real name and his real phone number – so with a little help from an anonymous tip-off, the police eventually tracked him down to an apartment one block away from the store. He’s now been arrested in connection with several local armed robberies.

We couldn’t help but ponder what caused this moment of madness. Did the store clerk launch into a particularly aggressive pre-screening interview? Did Robinson uncover some unwitting bias against his age/ sexuality/ gender/ childcare arrangements in the structure of the application form? Was he stuck for an answer to the question: ‘In no more than 200 words, give an example of a time when you’ve successfully exploited an opportunity’?

Or was he just a very dim armed robber? Answers on a postcard...
