The Story of Lucy Gault by William Trevor is his masterpiece. You need an almost physical effort to put it down and return to a real world that then seems less real. It is a heart-emptying love story, a dark demonstration of how a single chance event can dictate a life, and a haunting reminder that you can never entirely leave the place you came from.
