Most of the books I've read recently have been business related, but I often return to the beautifully written classic novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee and continue to enjoy the lyrical pace and the atmosphere it evokes. This was one of the first books that made a big impact on me. I read it as a teenager, and was particularly struck by Lee's delicate yet brutal portrayal of the different forms of prejudice that exist in society.
Paco Underhill's book Why We Buy has been one of the most useful business-related books I have read - and a must-read for those running retail operations of all shapes and sizes. It provides crisp insights into consumer shopping behaviour, and the level of detail that he and his researchers apply is enhanced by a humorous tone. Although the book primarily deals with shopping in a high street environment, I encourage all my teams to dip into it, as we can apply many of the maxims to online retailing.
