Books: Three of a kind - How to turn your team into winners

Management Teams; R Meredith Belbin; Elsevier £16.99 The eminence grise of team theory, Belbin provides a practical guide using his own research and case studies, as well as supplying readers with a background on the study of teams, a chapter on where we are today and a self-perception inventory. There's also an interesting section on the characteristics of unsuccessful teams. An informative insight into running a team that is serious yet easy to read.

Could be useful

The Biz - Little things that make a big difference to team motivation and leadership; David Freemantle; Brealey £9.99

The best team leaders do the biz and make a difference, according to the author of this book, which combines 50 tips with cartoons and surveys. Some tips - 'work hard', 'hire the best' - are hardly original, although others offer more insight. An entertaining read for those wanting a break from traditional texts, but it lacks depth and offers few fresh ideas.

Of minor interest

The Secrets of Successful Team Management; Michael West; Duncan Baird £9.99

A former coalminer, the author of this book suggests that the secret of successful team management is self-improvement. Short, enlightening chapters are interspersed with questionnaires, colourful designs and solutions to problems that may arise in the workplace. A good text that strikes the balance between being accessible and comprehensive.

Best of its kind.
