The wide-ranging research uncovers a veritable cauldron of simmering resentment on everything from employment tribunals (45% of bosses believe they are biased toward employees) and references received (71% said the quality of these had dropped in the last year) to red tape (84% find employment legislation ‘increasingly burdensome’) and even GPs. Yes, the family practitioner gets it in the neck, too, with 67% of employers feeling that doctors encourage employees to take unnecessary time off work and a whopping 93% considering that GPs should do more to encourage sickly patients back into harness.
Bolshy bosses final grumble is reserved for that great boon of modern life, flexible working. 40% of them seem to rue the day that staff were granted a bit of control over their own destinies, saying that productivity would be improved if managers (ie themselves) were allowed to decide people’s working hours. Just like it was in the good old days, eh?
All of which just goes to show that the people in charge are at least as resistant to change as the workers whom they constantly exhort to embrace it. Plus ca change
