'Cannibalisation' has long haunted market leaders as it can mean losing profitable trade from the main business - and millions on the 'spoiler' operation (as BA found when it confronted the budget airline easyJet with its own no-frills enterprise, Go). And now there's the threat of e-commerce cannibalisation, the fear of which is stopping or slowing e-initiatives.

General Electric's Jack Welch is having none of that. Every GE division must start 'destroyyourbusiness.com', led by a destructive and net-wise executive. The mandate is to find 'killer apps' that will undermine the main business - and the competition: ie 'let's do it to them before they do it us'. A cannibal-in-chief sounds an excellent way to shatter complacent mind-sets. What if it also shatters future profits? Here Welch can relax.

This is the great CEO's last year.
