The Emperor Napoleon built the Hotel du Palais at Biarritz in 1854 as a summer palace for his wife, the Empress Eugenie. Today, it is still a wonderful place to take a summer holiday, with magnificent rooms overlooking the Atlantic ocean and the beach nearby. I'm not one for just sitting around on holiday, and the hotel is a perfect base for day trips out, golf, tennis and surfing for the kids. The city centre is just 100 metres away, so sometimes we spend the day there simply walking around looking at the splendid architecture and the museums.
