Life is stressful and busy enough and if I were starting again I would focus on creating an environment that would be enjoyable and fun, and as a consequence more productive and creative. One of the things I would change would be my attitude towards time. When you are in your thirties you think it infinite. You find as time passes this is not the case. So, starting again, I would prioritise what is really important in order to lead a fuller and more balanced life, developing a wider range of interests.
America will be the most significant influence on our way of life for some time to come. It is the source of technology and wealth-creation and an environment that encourages risk and creativity. I would strongly recommend gaining significant exposure to the US at an early stage in your career, as I believe that it would be a great strength in later years.
I think that it is very important to build a career where you can truly add value, since over time this is the only thing that is sustainable. Given that business will continue on an inevitable global trend, being part of a business with global potential will see your future well served. Finally, I would follow my instincts and, where something was not working, I would cut it off much sooner. You can waste a great deal of time trying to make something work that is just too difficult and probably not worth the effort. Above all, if you enjoy what you do it probably means you are doing it well.
