They show up for work even when too ill, stressed or distracted to be productive, or feel they must do extra work even when there is none to do. Bankers used to leave their coats on their chairs and head out to the pub, to give the impression they were 'working late'. But Presenteeists never leave their chairs; they stopped drinking months ago for fear of not being able to head back into work early the next day They are convinced that when the chop eventually comes, 'he with the most face time wins'.

Treatment is accidental: when they phone in sick, the boss never gets their message and doesn't notice.
