Role strain is a bit like a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It covers just about every symptom in the psychology book and is blamed for stress, depression and divorce. We once knew who we were and what we did. Then things got messed up. With both partners at work, it's hard to figure out whose job it is to sit through the 3pm swimming gala. Role strain is also observed in the workplace - if a job description isn't clearly spelled out, you can find yourself playing boss and employee at the same time. Treatment is as general as the antibiotics. For some, being parent, significant other and investment banker all at once is as easy as chopping vegetables while talking. For others, the answer lies in the hands of executive coaches and work psychologists - masters of definitions and delineation
