Brain Food: Us And Them - Brazil

Brazil, home of the famous carnival, is the fifth-largest country in the world (by area), has the fifth-largest population, and fifth-largest prison population to match. Goldman Sachs identified Brazil as one of four developing countries to watch and predicts that its economy will overtake the UK's by 2036. Brazil's GDP stands at $503 billion, with a growth rate of 2.6%. But it also has the highest foreign debt in the developing world ($226 billion).

Compared with Britain, Brazil has double the number of households, less than half the number of marriages and less than a quarter the number of divorces. There are 16.7 mobile phone subscribers per 100 people in Brazil, as against 78.3 per 100 in the UK. And there are 2.5 doctors for every 1,000 Brazilians, compared with 1.8 doctors per 1,000 in the UK.
