Originally synonymous with 'sideways move' or 'horizontal promotion', 'lateral arabesque' has come to mean elegantly shifting position in a discussion. Strangely, in ballet it is a pose, not a movement. US educator Laurence Peter may not follow classical dance, but knows people. In 1969, his Peter Principle stated: 'In a hierarchy, every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence' - except with a 'lateral arabesque', where the incompetent gets a new title and a remote office: still tutu common today.
