Britain's Most Admired by Sector: Building materials and merchants

Growth is but a memory for most in this troubled sector.

Building materials & merchants
1. Kingspan 67.0
2. SIG 64.6
3. Marshalls 63.0
4. Travis Perkins 61.4
5. CRH 60.7

But it's straight in at number one for impressive newcomer Kingspan, the Cavan, Ireland-based building-supplies specialist, a darling of the Irish markets in recent years. Having just completed a EUR330m refinancing deal, Kingspan bosses remain cautiously upbeat - but sales and profits are falling. Steady-as she-goes SIG stays in second place, while last year's sector winner Marshalls is third, despite a solid performance in a tough market. Last in sector is former BMAC high-flier Wolseley, which is cutting 2,000 jobs in the UK after profits fell 80%, and closing 200 of its branches in Britain.
