Britain's Most Admired by Sector: Construction (heavy)

Another sector win for Balfour Beatty, whose profits are forecast to rise some £40m to £240m this year, despite a torrid twelvemonth in the industry.

1 Balfour Beatty 59.9
=2 Carillion 59.1
=2 Kier Group 59.1
4 Keller Group 55.7
5 Rok 54.2

Half the firm's business comes from public-sector contracts, which provide reliable earnings in a downturn. A 60% rise in profits for Carillion's maintenance and servicing arm helped mitigate the effects of the slowdown on its construction business. Falling housing sales hit third-placed Kier's profits, down 14% to £63.4m in the first half. Rok's enlightened approach to customer relations helped it to a creditable fifth place, but the slump is biting hard: profits are down by £12m and some 750 jobs are set to go.
