Britain's Most Admired by sector: Construction (home)

Last Updated: 09 Oct 2013

1 Berkeley Group 62.7
2 Persimmon 51.2
3 Bellway 50.7
4 Bovis Homes 49.8
5 Barratt Developments 43.6

An astonishing result for Berkeley Group, a clear 11 points ahead of the pack in a sector that has taken another beating. Optimism is in short supply: the sector total of 453.1 is down nearly 50 points on 2008's already low figure. Berkeley founder Tony Pidgley's installation as executive chairman drew brickbats from corporate governance watchdogs at PIRC but had shareholder support. Persimmon, Bellway and Barratt may benefit from a big land giveaway, if rumours of talks with Lloyds over its disposal of land assets built up by HBOS are true. September's share placing helped fourth-placed Bovis to raise £60m to spend on bargain-hunting for new sites.
