We love our smartphones, even in a downturn - a fact that helped Cambridge-based ARM to a well-earned sector win.

Its Risc chips are found in 98% of the world's mobiles. The weak pound gave it a boost, with Q3 profits up 17% to £24.9m. Siemens, although damaged reputationally by ongoing bribery scandals (it was fined EUR38m by a German court last year), has had a strong financial performance. CEO Peter Loscher expects growth relative to global GDP to continue in 2009. There are two more Cambridge-headquartered firms in the top five, printing and labelling specialist Domino Printing Sciences and market-leading Bluetooth module designer CSR.
