This is a sector faring better than most. Another win makes it five years on the trot for ultra-reliable Rolls-Royce.

With £5bn of new orders in the third quarter, the firm is reaping benefits of diversity, such as its marine division's £96m deal to supply engines for the Royal Navy's two new aircraft carriers. But 2,000 jobs are to go, 140 of them in the UK. Defence business Cobham made more than £1bn of acquisitions in the first half of the year, and boss Allan Cook remains bullish. Battlefield IT specialist Ultra Electronics - supplier of video download and e-mail infrastructure to British troops in Iraq - also bucked the trend, with first-half profits up 16%.
