Last Updated: 09 Oct 2013

1 Rolls-Royce 70.0
2 Cobham 65.8
3 BAE Systems 64.9
4 Ultra Electronics 64.7
5 Chemring Group 57.8

Record order books and contracts such as the £178m Pentagon deal for the Advent aero engine kept RR in level flight this year, topping a bullish sector and coming in sixth overall. Military comms specialist Cobham expects to see full-year profits up 30% on rising global demand. BAE Systems, Europe's largest defence business, is betting on fighter aircraft for growth, hoping for revenues of £6.3bn in 2010 from its Eurofighter and Joint Strike Fighter involvement. At electronics outfit Ultra, first-half revenues were up 40% and it's still in buying mode (it bought three businesses this year). Boom-time in munitions propels pyrotechnics specialist Chemring to fifth.
