Britain's Most Admired by sector: Paper & Packaging

Last Updated: 09 Oct 2013

1 DS Smith 62.2
2 British Polythene Industries 60.5
3 Smurfit Kappa Group 58.5
4 Rexam 55.8
5 RPC Group 55.0

A tough year in this new-to-BMAC sector - demand for corrugated packaging fell, paper's profitability went backwards, and waste paper costs rose. But leader DS Smith scored well for financial soundness and quality of goods and services. New CEO Miles Roberts can smile. British Polythene is Europe's largest producer of polythene film and bags and largest recycler of polythene waste. Third-placed Smurfit Kappa, Europe's leading supplier of corrugated packaging, imposed a 25% price rise in September to boost margins. After a £350m rights issue in July, Rexam gets a new CEO, Graham Chipchase, in January. Plastic packaging firm RPC managed to raise its dividend and cut debt.
