Centrica 64.4
Scottish & Southern Energy 59.8
National Grid 56.8
Severn Trent 55.7
International Power 53.3

Two big risers in this category: Centrica in pole position (14th overall) and Severn Trent. Centrica's acquisition of British Gas looks to be progressing well: despite big price hikes, residential energy supply accounts rose by 200,000 to 15.7 million. Scottish & Southern Energy clings on in second place, after celebrating the opening of its £160m hydro-electric scheme at Glendoe. It has been a tough year for previous winner National Grid; it says £215bn must be spent over the next 10 years on replacing and refurbishing ageing infrastructure. And despite profits reducing to a trickle at Severn Trent, a focus on customer service has helped it to an impressive fourth place.
