Discount retailer Poundworld now has over 242 stores nationwide and plans to open a further 150 stores by 2017. The West Yorkshire-based business was started in 1974 as a stall in Wakefield market selling household goods. Sales soared in 2013-14 to £345m with profits coming in at £5m. The business run and owned by the Edwards family, led by father and son team Chris and Chris junior, is now worth £200m when valued against quoted rival Poundland.
