Landing a job at Goldman Sachs is normally the stuff of dreams, a ticket to untold riches. But Alex Chesterman had other ideas. When the Wall Street giant came knocking in 1990, the University College London graduate politely declined. Instead of joining the "masters of the universe", Chesterman took up an offer to run the Hard Rock Cafe in Orlando, Florida, for a summer, but stayed three months short of 10 years.
Two decades later, the bold decision has been vindicated. Imbued with entrepreneurial zeal after stints at Hard Rock and Planet Hollywood, he launched the property website Zoopla in 2008. It floated on the stock market in June valued at £919m.
