Britain's Top 100 Entrepreneurs 2014: No. 68 - Gregory Darling, Gardline

The offshore services entrepreneur is worth £205m.

by Philip Beresford

Gardline Shipping was established in 1969 by the late George Darling who sold his scrapyard and forklift truck business to become the part-owner of a ship which cashed in on the survey market created by the North Sea's burgeoning oil and gas industry. It nearly went out of business in the 1980s. Today Great Yarmouth-based Gardline is run by his son Gregory and it is involved in areas ranging from marine sciences, satellite communications, shipbuilding and renewable energy services. In 2012-13 its sales hit a record £229m.
