Businesses have bank holiday blues

With the UK in the grip of royal wedding fever, it seems not everyone is having reason to celebrate. In a survey of more than a thousand workers in small businesses, a quarter said they will be working on the bank holiday.  

According to Sage, which carried out the research, 26% of the 1127 people questioned said they would be working as normal – and that’s not just the crowd control department of the Metropolitan Police. You’ll be forgiven though for thinking this story has a touch of the déjà-vu element about it.  Business compliance firm ELAS has also published a survey saying that a quarter of businesses won’t be giving employees an extra bank holiday.

But at least that’s an improvement on the number of employees who said, with ten days to go, they were still in the dark about whether they would get the day off at all.  Recruitment firm Badenoch & Clark said there was widespread confusion across the country over what will happen to workers.  In its survey of 1,000 employees, one in four office workers still didn’t know whether they would have the day off.  This 25% figure seems to be popular indeed.

Perhaps the most interesting story about the royal wedding to come out today, though, is how often the happy event is mentioned online.  According to data compiled by marketing firm Greenlight, in the week to April 18th there were 9,000 posts a day relating to the royal wedding, with Will’s and Kate’s impending nuptials mentioned once every ten seconds. So at least MT can’t be accused of being off-trend.
