MY BEST... 'Founding the Redbus Group has given me my social life back. It's a private investment company that provides advice as well as money to new businesses like Redbus Interhouse and the Redbus Film Group. I started it with half of the pounds 30 million I made from the sale of Demon Internet (to Scottish Telecom in 1998). Demon was my first business and I really enjoyed it, but I don't want to work 18-hour days any more - that cost me my marriage. At Redbus I usually take the chairman's job in firms we invest in and leave the day-to-day stuff to my team. It's great fun - I make money helping other people realise their ideas, and work more normal hours.'

MY WORST...

'Taking Demon Internet into Europe half-heartedly. In the mid-90s we were growing rapidly in the UK and I knew we should move into Europe. We opened an office in Amsterdam - and that was as far as it got. Instead of working to a proper expansion plan, we were trying to do it on an ad hoc basis but there wasn't enough management time to do it properly. Also, I took too little money from too many sources in the early days. In 1995 I raised pounds 5.5 million from numerous small investors; what the business needed was pounds 8 million from one or two.'
