MY BEST ... 'Moving to my island in Twickenham. My best ideas have always come from my home, because I don't feel I'm oiling the cogs of the rat-race, nor am I getting stressed by it. The story begins in 1956, when I missed out on going to the Melbourne Olympics. The swimming got me a job selling pools, which then got me a job as a stunt adviser for the likes of Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. Through this I did an underwater escape act for the Berlin Circus, which earned me the most money I've ever made so quickly - pounds 350 a day for 18 days in 1970! It enabled me to borrow the pounds 20,000 necessary to build my house All this means I don't need to live a 9-5 existence. I work whenever I like in my bedroom and have a studio downstairs. Today my biggest problem is a leaking pontoon.'

MY WORST ...

'Trusting my bankers. In the 1980s I came up with an idea for a range of products for the disabled, primarily people with one arm. Called Orange-Aid, it comprised clippers, scissors, bottle openers - you name it. When the banks moved in they stripped me of my intellectual property, mishandled the venture and left me penniless. The experience cost me pounds 30,000. As a result, I'm setting up a UK Academy of Invention to protect people's ideas. Instead of them being talked down to and humiliated, I want inventors to be successful in their own right. If Dyson can't compete with Hoover over alleged ideas copying, what chance have ordinary entrepreneurs?'
