MY BEST ... My best work decision was to start S&A Foods. I was dissatisfied with the Indian dishes available in my area and decided to start cooking from my home for the local takeaway. From the start I had a vision of something bigger - to provide international dishes of high quality to supermarkets around the world. My dishes proved very popular with the local takeaway and shops, and I soon moved into supplying supermarkets across the country. S&A now employs 1,200 staff, has a turnover of pounds 90 million and produces dishes from around the world. We have announced plans for a new factory and are launching a new 'Perween' brand, a range of premium-quality international meals.
MY WORST ... Bad decisions are really just learning experiences in disguise. I do not feel I have made many decisions that I've regretted and been unable to reverse. S&A was slow in deciding to build the extension to the Derby factory in 1998 and this caution impacted on the further growth of our business at the time. Nevertheless, our growth for the period '98/99 was still 40%. This taught us to believe more in our ability and potential for expansion - and now we are planning to build a further factory in Staffordshire.
