MY BEST ... 'Selling Red or Dead in 1995. My partner Gerardine and I had spent 13 years building it up and we wanted to move on. It's not just that the sale made us wealthy, it also made us happier and improved our quality of life. We were still involved with Red or Dead. But, without the headache of dealing with the day-to-day pressures of owning the business, we could be much more creative. We've also been able to do other things - we've had our fourth child and Gerardine has started working on designer interiors, designing carpets for Milliken and kitchens for Miele, as well as some architectural projects. I've had time to write, and to present some TV, including a style slot on The Big Breakfast. I've also developed some technology ideas and have started a fashion consultancy.'
MY WORST ... 'It sounds cheesy, but I can't think of any really bad decisions. Selling Red or Dead was difficult. Although overall it has been a good thing, at the time we thought we'd made a huge mistake. It was like selling a child that we'd spent years bringing up. Gerardine shed a lot of tears, and we were convinced it was the worst decision we'd ever made. But it's worked out, and I've kept my involvement with Red or Dead as a non-executive chairman and minor shareholder. I suppose now we get the best of both worlds.'
